Eminem’s “Symphony in H” is exactly that, ho-hum.

Tony Touch’s Piecemaker 3: Return of the 50 MCs

Granted it’s been over five years since I cared about anything Eminem has put out, but it doesn’t mean I won’t take the time to give whatever he puts out at least a chance. When he was at his apex, Shady made as convincing a case as can be made to being the greatest emcee. I’ll refer to it often as the ‘holy trinity’ – an artist staking their claim among the greats in their genre by turning in three good to masterful albums – and he did this with The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show. You just can’t ignore that catalogue of music when the guy puts out something new. Recovery was as disappointing an Eminem project I’d ever encountered outside of Encore (“PILLS ARE GOOOOOOD.”) It was doubly disappointing because I’m one of the few who appreciated the experimentation and risks he took on Relapse. Recovery was a direct pushback, dismissive of every chance he took with his previous solo effort.

But this forty-second snippet, is this supposed to get me excited? Is this just an attempt to remain relevant? During a week of highly anticipated releases from Ye and Cole finally hitting shelves, does Eminem feel left out? For a guy who seemingly lives in the studio and takes more than enough pictures to build this persona, he sure does take a while to put out music…

What do you think about it? More cornball wordplay from a once-was or just a throwaway verse to keep his hat in the ring and his presence felt? Are you excited for his next solo effort?
